Karen Carter Peterson is the current State Senator for Lousiana's 5th state senate district. She was first elected to 5th district in 2010 and she last won in 2019, with 79.4% of the votes.


Previously, Karen Peterson served as state House member from 1999-2010 and served as House Speaker Pro Tempore (2008-2010).


Karen Peterson earned her JD from Tulane Univ and BA from Howard Univ.


Karen and her husband Dana Peterson (a political consultant) live in New Orleans' Warehouse District, within Louisiana's 2nd congressional district.
