We are supporting Chellie Pingree for Congress in 2008. We believe in Chellie, because she is a great person and a great friend. As a state senator in Maine, Chellie fought for election reform and significant healthcare reform, battling the pharmaceutical industry for lower prescription drug prices. It was a successful fight that took her all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
More recently, as the president and CEO of Common Cause, Chellie was a leader on issues like campaign finance reform, media consolidation and voting rights.
And as a candidate for US Senate in 2002, Chellie was one of the only federal candidates of either party to oppose the war in Iraq.
In addition to her great work on those issues, Chellie has been a huge supporter of the Toughcats. For those of you who don’t know, The Toughcats are a band from the Fox Islands in Penobscot Bay in Maine. (One of those islands is North Haven, Chellie’s hometown.) Chellie has at times housed us, fed us, and given us a place to practice. She has shared advice with us, and even baked cookies and pies for our trips.
Whether you live in a small coastal community, in the farmlands of the midwest, or in an urban metropolis such as San Francisco or New York, representatives from every state affect you, and your support of Chellie Pingree for Congress will have a positive impact on all of us. Chellie will be a great congresswoman, and your support will help get her elected in 2008!
