We recently had the opportunity to meet Jeff Merkley, the Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives. Jeff is running for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Gordon Smith. We got to know him at a campaign fundraiser hosted by some friends of ours. He discussed issues that are important to us, such as health care and peace in the Middle East. More importantly, Jeff spoke about a set of values that we share. He talked about meeting the needs of working families, protecting our environment, and restoring respect for civil and human rights. We think that Jeff’s background and accomplishments make him well qualified to be our next U.S. Senator. He served in the Defense Department as a Presidential Fellow, and then in the Congressional Budget Office. Jeff returned to his home state of Oregon, where he was born and raised. He took the helm of Oregon’s Habitat for Humanity as the Executive Director, and after that became the President of the World Affairs Council of Oregon. Speaker Merkley has served in the Oregon House of Representatives for 5 terms now. The term he just finished was one of the most productive in over 15 years, thanks in large part to Jeff’s leadership, vision, negotiating skills … and plain old hard work. It seemed to us that every time we picked up the newspaper during this latest Legislative Session, there was a headline about an important piece of legislation that had been passed. Join us in supporting Jeff Merkley for U.S. Senate!
