Let’s play offense: Grant’s campaign has a real chance of success in Idaho, long considered a GOP stronghold. Grant, a centrist businessman, is ahead in some polls, and his opponent, Bill Sali, is so extreme that lots of Idaho Republicans won’t back him. In a small media market like Idaho, even a small contribution can go a long way.

The only thing better than a Democratic majority is a Democratic majority AND taking Dick Cheney’s old House seat. The Mountain West is trending blue, in no small part due to charismatic candidates like Trauner, who has knocked on more 30,000 doors in his effort to unseat unpopular incumbent Barbara Cubin. Cubin got only 61% in her primary re-election race. This is a winnable seat

Derby is another terrific candidate from the interior west who is challenging hard in what should be a red seat: the most recent independent poll put her within the margin of error, and that was before the Foleygate scandal. Jerry McNerney

CA-11 (Map)

McNerney is running against Richard Pombo, perhaps the worst Representative in America. That’s saying a lot, and Pombo qualifies: he’s eye-deep in corruption through his connections with Jack Abramoff, and been the leading force in trying to destroy environmental protection laws, attempting to sneak provisions in legislation to sell off national parks and repeal the Endangered Species Act. McNerney, a wind-power executive, was overlooked by national pundits, but has recently emerged tied in the polls.

Kirsten Gillibrand

NY-20 (Map)

Gillibrand is running a tough, efficient race in upstate New York against incumbent John Sweeney, who is known for two things: 1) working with Republican thugs in Florida in 2000 to hand the Presidential victory to Bush; and 2) going to college fraternity parties (really). Gillibrand is fighting back hard, attacking Sweeney on economic issues and Iraq. No one gave her much of a chance—but now Congressional Quarterly has rated the race a “toss-up”.

Darcy Burner

This race could be ground zero for the national campaign. It’s a district in suburban Seattle that has attracted a lot of attention. Burner is a former Microsoft executive who has come from nowhere to be neck-and-neck in the polls with her Republican opponent, who pretends to be moderate and votes with Bush more than 90% of the time.

James Webb

VA-Sen (Map)

Jim Webb opposed the war before it began in Iraq and urged his current opponent, incumbent George Allen to vote against it. Jim Webbâs Washington Post editorial in September 2002 warned that an Iraq invasion would hurt the overall War on Terror. Webb has impressive military credentials that will make him a voice to reckon with in turning around our failing and immoral foreign policy. A 1968 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was a varsity boxer, he served as a Marine officer in Vietnam. Twice wounded, he earned the Navy Cross, the Silver Star medal, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. Webb went on to collect a law degree from Georgetown, serve as counsel to the House Veterans Affairs Committee, receive appointments as assistant defense secretary and secretary of the Navy in the Reagan administration. He has also won an Emmy Award, and penned six bestselling novels!

Claire McCaskill

Claire’s opponent, Senator Jim Talent, has voted with George Bush 94% of the time. Republicans are pouring money into his campaign and running vicious attack ads against McCaskill in their desperate attempts to keep Talentâs rubber stamp stamping! Although sheâs being wildly outspent Barbara Boxerâs Pac for Change predicts that as long as McCaskill can match them one dollar for three of their dollars, she can hold on.
