Tom grew up in Albemarle County. Since he graduated from Yale Law School, he has worked for justice in West Africa, Darfur, Kosovo and Afghanistan. He helped to launch DarfurGenocide.org and the National Religious Coalition Against Torture. When he returned to the U.S. in 2004, he co-founded Res Publica, a project that galvanized progressive faith voices to challenge the religious right in U.S. elections.

Tom believes that standing up for human rights and international law can be part of a winning strategy; that a message of justice can trump a conservative incumbent in the rural South; that Americans are ready for a new generation of leaders who accept the reality of interdependence and the moral urgency of the common good.
The Fifth Congressional District needs Tom and his philosophy of government and society working for the “common good”—not for corporate lobbyists or corrupt defense contractors, but for the people of the Fifth, who need health insurance for their children (Virgil Goode voted against renewing SCHIP), and who need the help of the economic stimulus package (Virgil was one of 34 to vote against it).
Tom has gotten off to a great fund-raising start, but he doesn’t have his opponent’s advantage of having corporate PACs writing him checks. He must rely on private contributions like yours.
