The DCCC Emerging Races list is made up of candidates who have taken traditionally non-competitive districts and, through the strength of their campaigns, put themselves in a position to win in November. Emerging Races candidates represent the new direction that American voters are searching for and all have pledged to put the priorities of middle class families first when they get to Washington.
“With less than two months to go, the DCCC is excited to give our top candidates the necessary strategic and financial boost they will need to win in November,” said Congressman Rahm Emanuel, Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Americans are looking for new leadership and a new direction and these Democratic candidates will put middle-class families first when they get to Washington.”

Tim Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska on April 6, 1964. Raised in a rural community, Walz spent his summers farming with his extended family. Prior to graduating from high school, Tim enlisted in the Army National Guard at the age of 17. In 1989, Walz earned a B.S. in social science education from Chadron State College in Nebraska and spent the following two years teaching high school students in China. Married in 1994, Tim and Gwen Walz moved from Nebraska to Mankato, Minnesota two years later. The couple accepted positions teaching and coaching at Mankato West High School where Tim continues to teach today.

Peter Goldmark started his education in a one-room schoolhouse at Duley Lake near Okanogan, Washington. He went to high school in Okanogan and graduated in 1967 from Haverford College near Philadelphia. After receiving his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971, he traveled to Harvard University for a post-doctoral fellowship in neurobiology. Following his marriage in 1972, he moved back to Okanogan with his wife, Georgia. Together, they raised their five children on the family ranch. Sadly, Georgia succumbed to cancer in 2003.
