Democratic pickups are likely in the form of Mark Udall in Colorado, Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire, Tom Udall in New Mexico, and Mark Warner in Virginia. Contributions there will ensure candidates win but also help Senator Obama capture the state.
Kay Hagan is showing a slight lead in very competitive North Carolina as well.
There are six other races that are incredibly close that could put the Democrats at 60 votes in the Senate if the Democrats were able to almost run the tables, although some are in tough states. Those candidates include Mark Begich in Alaska, Jeff Merkley in Oregon, Al Franken in Minnesota, Ronnie Musgrove in Mississippi, and Bruce Lunsford in Kentucky. Two of these five are currently in the lead and three are very close to overcoming incumbent Republicans as well.
Even if Senator Obama wins the presidency, he will need a strong Senate in order to govern the country and overcome filibusters by far right senators such as Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint.
